"LIVE LIFE" RIP DJ Hideo

So this past week, I heard the news of DJ Hideo loosing his battle with cancer.... very unfortunate. I only had the pleasure of meeting him one night when I was shooting some friends (Common Ground via hybrid roots), and Hideo let us use his space over on the westside. He was a really genuine person. It was very obvious that he made himself happy by doing what he loved... Helping people recognize how to "feel" music. I know he was a mentor to many and inspiration to all the people he encountered. He was known as the "Hardest working DJ on the wescoast", and because he loved his work, and music was his passion... it wasn't really work to him. I pulled up this shot below from the day I shot Common Ground.... He looks like he's playing around... and well, he was having fun with it! He always pushed on the saying "Live Life". I believe he did and taught many to follow their passions and have fun when you're doing what you love to do. RIP DJ Hideo.

As I decided to write this post, and share the photo of Hideo's contagious smile, I found out that this evening you can listen to a mix of Hideo's. (details below)

Chocolate & Honey

So I seem to have been neglecting my Getty Images contract a little bit in the past year and a half or so.... and I really haven't made any stock submission since... well, I think since my contract was with Jupiter Images, and that was a while ago. Now I've revisited some of the older shoots that I had done originally for stock, and turns out I had stuff that I had shot from 2007 that needed to be prepped and submitted. Yeah... 2007. So I've been working on the "Hill Country Hike" shoot submission, which was finalized and completed a few days ago. Now I am currently working on a few more smaller submissions (10-12 images, oppose to 50+). About two or three weeks ago, I shot a bunch of simple items(chocolate, honey, peppers, olives) on simple background, specifically for stock and turns out I got a little more creative with it than originally planned and came up with some really cool graphic shots. I think all the variations of the chocolate and honey that I shot came out really cool, but I really do just have a strong liking for both chocolate and honey.... I might have a chocolate/honey problem. Below is a sample shot, of one of my favorites from the shoot.

So with all of these meetings, appointments, agendas, and schedules that we crowd our lives with, we have yet to realize that in only a moments time everything can come to a screeching halt. Your entire life and everything in it and around it will or has changed. You can't think, simply due to the information that you have come to grasp. Thoughts of memories from the past and would be occasions/gatherings in the future evolve into long surreal visions in your mind. When we hear news, and/or witness things that can effect, have effected, or will effect many lives, our hectic agendas are handicapped with the reality of what has taken place.
In the past few weeks, I have encountered an overwhelming amount of news, and stories involving accidents, unfortunate happenings, and loss of life of many great people.... An awkward amount of coincidences of... well, a word I'm not too fond of, but death.
As we rush through life, it takes death to make us realize that there is no need to rush. Through out my life, it seems as though the older I get the more people I encounter, and the more friends, pals, buddies I have made. There are beautiful people all around us and with-in each one of us. We are not the same, but we are really not very different. Love, hate, jealousy, envy, joy, tension, and every emotion that effects each one of us, effects us all in different capacities, and depths.... but we all experience so much of the same feelings with the celebration of life... and death.
Many people come into our lives and teach us who they are... where they are from, and what they mean. The things in their life that moves them, and motivates them, and agitates them, and things that upset them... we grow from it, whether we agree or disagree... we take it in. I've learned from people twice my age, as well as from people half my age. Everyday is a lesson, whether or not you are teaching or learning. Adventures happen whether scheduled or unplanned. We document these moments in our book of memories and almost like a rolodex file, and we refer back to them periodically. A song, a smell, a photo, any minuscule item throughout our day, can remind us of a person that has had an effect on our lives. Stained into our memories are the life lessons we have absorbed by those before us, and the values and tools of life that we will pass onto those we teach today, and will teach tomorrow. Cherish the moments, and preserve the memories.
What do you want to do with your life...? From instant life changing accidents to chronic terminal illnesses, we don't know what tomorrow will bring for us all. We must be grateful for our life and everything and everyone that has made it what it is.
My father/best friend (who passed away seven years ago) always said to "Live everyday like it's Saturday, and every Saturday like it's the Fourth of July!" There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him, and who I am because of everything that he taught me to be and all the things in life that he taught me to appreciate. Sunsets, rattlesnakes, flowers, and steaks... no matter if it was untouchable, poisonous, fragrant, or delicious, everything in life has value to someone. Don't get me wrong, there are many things in life that I do not appreciate, but on that note I do realize that there are those who don't appreciate everything that I do...
Take nothing for granted, and take nothing too serious. Or else you won't realize what the hell all this is for. I'm not exactly sure what the meaning of all this is, but I'm gonna make the best of it all and love every minute of it.

"PUNKS+THUGS" project samples, set-up and story.

Getting ready to shoot the up and coming Los Angeles punk band "Counterfeit Saints" for my "PUNKS+THUGS" project.

The "PUNKS&THUGS" project is driven by the music. The look of any "PUNK" and/or "THUG" is clear... Whether it be a mohawk, tattoos and a chained wallet, OR diamonds+gold in the teeth, tattoos, and a fitted cap "broke way off"... Both characters are only driven by the lifestyle of the music. The music comes from the streets and the characters come from the music, and they don't really care if you like them or not. The level of confidence, and attitude that comes from their music is not comparable with any other form of expressive art. With this project I'm planning on showing the subject's expressive nature, whether it be crazy, cold, or creepy... I want the viewer to feel some strength of feeling from within the character.

Below is a sample shot I did of rapper David Banner for "PUNKS+THUGS" project (Also used for "respect my vote" campaign tour project).

A Little bit more about me...

At an early age, it was easy for me to discover that photography would become a life long passion. It has always been about being creative and having fun with it. When I photograph people, I am not only exposing them and their expressions, but I am also revealing my own creative vision; through lighting, creative composition, as well as camera control. Details in a photograph are crucial, but there's something about capturing spontaneity that reveals a certain truthfulness in people. Whether the image that is made be real or surreal, in the end it's all about making people look good and feel happy.
